Stepping out in faith to be Christ to others in the world

United Methodist Men

     Zion UMMen is an affiliate of United Methodist Men chartered through the General Commission on UMMen.  Our mission is simply "to enhance the centrality of Jesus Christ in men's lives and relationships."  However, our mission statement is too detailed to be included here but will be posted on the UMMen web page on the Zion web site.  I am sure that although our members bring many diverse perspectives to the table that we can agree that affirming the stated purpose of the General Commission on UMMen is our common mission.

     The mission of the UMMen is to help men center their lives and relationships on the teachings of Jesus Christ.  All other activities fall under this one goal. I have drafted a tentative mission statement for United Methodist Men that is under review by the leadership of Zion.  My hope is that it will be posted on our web page even if it is only a tentative mission statement.  I see that a unifying goal is to focus on what is of common importance and to choose the tasks involved in reaching that goal.  To do that we need a “mission statement.”  This first step will serve to give our group some direction and we will address it in our September meeting along with a discussion of events to take place that month

     CANVASSING OF MEMBERS:   As a second step, George Nieder is in charge of canvassing the Zion membership to see how we can increase attendance at our general meetings.

     YOU CAN HELP even if it is only for 30 minutes:  You see we have much available manpower and can accomplish much with a focused effort.

     SECRETARY POSITION VACANT:   With a secretary to take notes, the time of the meeting can be shortened and the President can better concentrate on the meeting topics, etc.  If you feel able to do this, please express your interest.

     PRAYER:  God give us the direction and strength to make UMMen meetings purposeful and productive, so that all participants will feel spiritually enlightened.

     Officers for the UMM:  Kenneth Ramsey, Acting President and Secretary; Marv Hall, Treasurer; George Nieder, Membership Canvasser;  Bodie Williams, UMMen Spiritual leader

      Steve Ellyson, UMM President since January, has resigned due to his impending move to West Virginia.  The Zion UMM appreciate Steve's leadership and seek to honor him by continuing their efforts to promote the education, mission, nurture, and evangelism initiatives adopted by the Church.

A Tribute to Mo Messer

     UMMen regret the passing of Mo Messer who was a good friend of the UMM.  Mo was particularly helpful during a couple of week-long service projects:  the Red Bird project, a trip to Kentucky where nine volunteers from Zion spent a week repairing, building and painting to help a distressed community, and more recently the Zion Camp project where a home was renovated and painted to aid a local family.

Phone Tree/Snail Mail

     Zion UMMen recognizes that not all members are computer savvy or have access to the internet.  Therefore, I am in the process of creating alternative lines of communication via a phone tree.  If you are interested leave me a note in the UMM mailbox in the fellowship hall.

     Any man with an interest in joining, please contact George Nieder, our Membership chairman

A Special Place for People with Disabilities

Mission Statement

Heart Havens is a nonprofit organization which was given birth by the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1996. We provide for the residential needs of adult individuals with mental retardation and developmental disabilities, regardless of their age, race, gender, or religious preference, through the development and management of group homes throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. This is accomplished by:

· Establishing and promoting a state-wide effort to address the residential needs of individuals with disabilities;
· Encouraging the individual’s involvement in the life of the local community and its resources;
· Respecting and nurturing the individual’s uniqueness, dignity, and worth;
· Ministering to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of each individual;
· Understanding and addressing the concerns and needs of each individual’s family;
· Affirming God’s love and care for all of His children.
