PARABLE of the Pounds Read Luke 19:12-27 Four Gospels have been written about Christ. When put all together, we come up with a clear “picture” of our Beloved Saviour and soon- Coming Bridegroom. Matthew, Mark, and Luke have been “dubbed” the Synoptic Gospels…………………simply put, they pose the same basic point of view or summary of Who is being spoken about; in this case, biographies of Jesus Christ. All three have parables in them. Some parables are common to only one of the three. Some are in two Gospels and a few in all three. When you read the parallel ones in more than one Gospel, the words vary……………some add a point and some leave out a point from one of the others. This is not reason for doubt or concern about the accuracy of the accounts, as Jesus is speaking to many different groups of multitudes thus He would have spoken the same stories more than once and hence, the different verbiage. John’s Gospel is different than the “synoptic” one in many ways, but mostly, it contains no parables. But all four give us a different view or picture of Jesus in their overall view…………….. Matthew presents Jesus as the “King of the Jews” Luke presents Jesus as the “Son of Man” Mark presents Jesus as the “Servant of God and for man” And John the Beloved disciple, speaks of Jesus as the “Son of God” This isn’t just a man’s designation, for we have two portions of Scripture which allude to the above themes………………. Ezek 1:5 Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man. 10 As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle. KJV Rev 4:6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind. 7 And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle. KJV Four living creatures who picture Christ Face of a man = Luke’s portrayal Face of a lion or King of the beasts = Matthew’s portrayal Face of an ox or a calf, a servant of man who plows the fields = Mark’s portrayal And Face of an eagle who flies in the heavenlies = John’s portrayal of Jesus who came down from heaven to dwell among us. Be amazed Saints of how skillfully God’s Word is so perfect and completely written. Now for our exposition of the Parable of the Pounds…………….. NT:3414 3414. mna= mná; gen. mnás, fem. noun from the Lat. mina representing a Greek weight containing one hundred drachmaí (1406). It is larger than the Roman libra or pound in the proportion of four to three. It is equivalent to twelve ounces. In the NT, mná is a silver coin, estimated by weight, containing one hundred drachmaí, and being itself the sixtieth part of a talent. Its value varied in different countries (Luke 19:13,16,18,20,24,25). Luke 19:12 He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. The Nobleman is Jesus The “far country” is heaven The Kingdom is us as His servants and subjects And the “return” is His Second Coming Lk 19:13 And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. “Occupy” till I come is another way of saying………………… Luke 2:49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? KJV We are to be doing the “business” of the Kingdom till Jesus returns at His Second Coming or till He takes anyone of us home via death. But death for the believer is only one door shutting an immediately another being opened…………………. 2 Cor 5:6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: 7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) 8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. KJV Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. KJV Let’s be honest Saints, we all have some degree of fear about dying, even though we believe that when our body dies, our “inner man” goes home to be with Christ. Someone has said:……….. “Everyone wants to go to Heaven, but no one wants to die to get there” But be of good cheer, it’s only one door closing and another opening. The unbeliever has no such hope and is in bondage of the fear of death because all they see is “dirt” in burial. “Is that all there is?” Surprise of the ages is to all those that see death as the end of existence. They have no hope……………how sad! We have all seen the acronym “RIP.” It means “Rest in Peace.” No unbeliever would want this engraved on their tombstone, for there is no rest in their belief system. We, on the other hand, understand that this rest of the body, even though it decays, will one day rise from the “dirt” and be joined with our “inner man” again at the resurrection from the grave. 1 Thess 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words. KJV Note, verse 14 ”if we believe” or better yet “we who believe.” The unbeliever will be raised, but for judgment and not the resurrection of the body to glorification as we will. We must also note from the above portion of text that there will be a whole group of “living Christians when Jesus returns. They are the ones who are called “alive and remain.” They also will partake of the same glorification of the body at the same juncture. More on that theme later. Hope you can wait! Hope is something that “stands in” for the focus of something or Someone…………… Rom 5:3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. KJV Rom 8:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, 21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. 23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. 24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? 25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. KJV Lk 19:14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us. Who is it here that hated Jesus? Remember, He is speaking to multitudes in the presence of His disciples. And within this multitude, there were also Pharisees and Sadducees or their minions who would report every word Jesus spoke, trying to find somewhere in His speech, the breaking of the LAW! They accused Him many times of Lawbreaking, but Jesus put them to shame with His Truth and their lack of understanding the God who they said they believed in. “He will not reign over US” they said in their self righteousness. “He is not OUR King” Gulp! Lk 19:15 And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. “And it came to pass”……………..what great words are these? What God starts, He will complete. It is a surety you will not find in any “self help” book. When Jesus returns at His Second Coming, rewards or lack of rewards will be meted out. He will take us to account for what we did with what He gave us……………….. Lk 19:16 Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds. This first servant gains tenfold. This is similar to the servant in the parable of the Talents who doubled his investment. 17 And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities. “Well done” those precious words we all should covet to be spoken to us when we stand before Him at the Judgment. “Ruler over 10 cities”……………..after Jesus returns to earth, and all the rewards are meted out, He sets up what is called His Millennial Reign. He is King and we are Princes and Princesses who will rule over the rest of the people who enter that reign in natural bodies as opposed to us in “resurrected” bodies. We will get to who those people are in a later study. Lk 19:18 And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds. The second comes and has five fold on the one pound investment. Remember the phrase in the parable of the Talents that God gives according each man’s ability. So it is not Him having anyone more special that another, but what they do with what they are given. One pound has the potential to grow by multiplication just as “hard work” brings more bucks, God’s gift can bring more fruit………………. Lk 19:19 And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities. This second servant gets five cities to rule over in the Millennial Reign. Lk 19:20 And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin: Sound familiar? This last servant did nothing with his entrusted pound. But note his audacity to still address the Nobleman as “LORD”………………. Lk 19:21 For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow. Familiar again…………….”fear” for he accuses the Nobleman of being austere or a hard man. Is this even true Saints? Not in the least. It is only a loose attempt for defense of being lazy or just not caring to please who he calls Lord. For any to call Jesus Lord is to attribute to Him our loyalty first because of our faith that He cares for us more than the birds of the air or anything else He has created. Man was the Crown of God’s Creation as we have seen in our Genesis studies. All Creation was below man, with only God above him. Lk 19:22 And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow: “Out of thine own mouth” is said another way by Jesus……………………… Matt 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. KJV Heavy duty stuff here don’t you think?............... “Every idle word” we are to give an account for. Sure scares “hell” out of me. How often have we spoken words that after they foolishly spilled out of our mouths, we wish we could take them back? I spoke back in the Genesis study just how powerful are words, for God “SPOKE” the Creation into existence and of all His Creatures, man only has been given speech and that is one of the ways we have been created in God’s image. Lk 19:23 Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury? Same question is asked of the wicked, unprofitable servant in the Parable of the Talents. “Why not?” This man could have done something as easy as putting the pound in the bank. That would have been better than the “nothing” he did by laying the pound in a napkin which only kept the dust off of it. I would say, he cared less for the things of God…………….and joins the religious in their statement that “we will not have this man reign over us.” Lk 19:24 And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds. 25 (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.) Again here Jesus “adds” to the first servant the extra pound from the last servant saying…………………….. Lk 19:26 For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him. “Those that have shall be given.” What does this mean? Not the pound, for it has not been given yet, but those with a true heart that the Lord already knew they would have for Him when the Word was preached to them like in the Parable of the Sower. “But he who has not” that ground of a good heart, loses his or her very life at the Judgment, where there shall be a “weeping and wailing” or “gnashing of teeth” in the “Outer Darkness”. Did you ever “grind your teeth” when some anguish has come upon you? Then imagine these wicked servants grinding their teeth for all Eternity. Not a great thought. Oh, if they only knew and understood what life and death means and that it is forever in the Lord’s Presence or forever separated from that Presence! Lk 19:27 But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me. KJV “My enemies” …………………….All those that will not have Jesus in their lives while breathing His air. Some of these sayings are truly “hard” but what is the “soft answer” He says to all………….? Matt 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. KJV A yoke is made for two animals to be joined side by side to pull the plow. It is not Jesus alone doing all the pulling, nor is it us doing it, but it is Together that we work till that day when we rest and bask in His Glory. When a Jewish farmer wanted to break in a young Ox, he would yoke him to an older, experienced One. We are that young Ox Saints and Jesus is the One who knows how to plow the grounds of men’s hearts. Who better to be joined to in the work of multiplying the Kingdom? Blessings, Bro Frankie
